In a recent article on Prevention.com, canned tomatoes were included on a list of foods to avoid. According to Dr. Fredrick Vom Saal, an endocrinologist at the University of Missouri, the resin linings of cans contain bisphenol-A (BPA). This synthetic estrogen has been linked to reproductive problems, diabetes, heart disease and obesity. The acidity in tomatoes causes BPA to leach into canned tomatoes. Dr. Vom Saal says that the level of BPA in a single can of tomatoes can impact people, especially the young.
You can avoid BPA exposure by choosing brands of tomatoes that are sold in glass bottles. See the full list of foods to avoid on Prevention.com.
