The New York Times recently reported that the old adage about not eating before bedtime in order to avoid heartburn has now been scientifically studied. Researchers found that eating a large meal within three to four hours of sleep is associated with a 700% increase in acid reflux symptoms.
Researcher also found that three to four hours is the magic number in terms of heartburn because that’s how long it takes for food to clear the stomach. While lying in bed shortly after a meal, there’s a greater likelihood of stomach acid slipping into the esophagus.
