Acid reflux is a common health problem that affects as much as 50 percent of the U.S. population. Many people combat excess stomach acid by taking an antacid.
A recent study has identified a common liquid that is more effective and fast-acting as a remedy for stomach acid. When study participants were given either an antacid or a glass of water, the water was found to increase gastric pH within one minute. Antacid was found to take more than two minutes to effect the same gastric pH increase.
The gastric pH remained elevated for 3 minutes after drinking water vs. 12 minutes after taking an antacid. Depending on the severity of symptoms, either water or antacid can be taken for acid reflux.
